Tip of the Week

Holding the finish

Whether it’s a putt, chip, pitch, or full swing, holding your finish is important for several reasons: First; it gives your swing a place to go to. Your swing is likely to be successful if it knows where the endpoint is. Second; the finish is the place to evaluate your decision making, your commitment, your focus, and any other aspects of the shot that interest you. Third: De-celeration is a common cause of missed shots, especially putts and shorter shots. Allowing your swing to come to a natural finish, where all energy is expended toward the target, encourages acceleration through the ball and towards the target. Fourth; holding your finish allows you to enjoy and instill your successful shots. When we turn away in disgust, or fail to “stay with the shot” we habituate a negative response that can carry over to future shots.

Try the following exercise: Spend 15 to 20 minutes playing various shots, including putts. Aim and fire. Watch each ball until it comes to a rest. Be aware of any physical sensations, notice where the ball goes, but hold any comments and avoid trying to make any changes for the next shot. Stay neutral. Try playing nine holes this way. What changes, differences, insights happen when you hold your finish, stay neutral, and observe the fullness of each shot?

Frost Delays

As we move into the fall frost may delay starting times on any given morning. If you have a morning time, and are concerned about a frost delay, give the pro-shop a call.

Vandalism

Thanks to all of you who have informed the golf shop of vandalism that you’ve witnessed through the season. Unfortunately, vandalism does not end with the approaching winter. Please help us protect Shane and the grounds crew’s hard work by staying alert to vandals and calling the golf shop when you see it happening.
